1. Description of the challenge

Wind turbine blade manufacturing is a complex and largely manual process, in which small quality deviations can have a major impact on product performance, safety, cost, and delivery time. During production, large amounts of data are already generated, such as measurement reports, inspections, and deviation records. However, this data is often used reactively, meaning that issues are typically addressed only after they have already occurred.

In this challenge, you will explore how data can be used more intelligently to identify quality issues at an earlier stage and support the shift from reactive to predictive quality control. The focus is not on building the perfect algorithm, but on determining which data is truly relevant, how quality risks can be detected earlier in the process, and how smarter use of data can support better decision making on the shop floor. Optionally, AR/MR technologies may also be included to improve inspection, visualization, or decision making in the production environment.

As the energy transition accelerates, manufacturers are under increasing pressure to scale up production while maintaining high and consistent quality. Traditional quality control approaches are reaching their limits, making this challenge highly relevant for the future of reliable and sustainable wind energy systems.

2. Expected outcome

A creative and well-founded concept that shows how data, and potentially AI, can be used more effectively to detect quality risks earlier in the production process, reduce failure costs and production delays, and support predictive quality control, presented in the form of an elevator pitch.
