1. Description of the challenge

During the “Hack The Water” hackathon, students will work in multidisciplinary teams on real-life water management challenges provided by Waterschap Limburg. The hackathon is organized through Meet the Youngsters, where students can also register via the application link: https://www.meettheyoungsters.nl/hackathon

The focus is on developing fresh and innovative ideas around themes such as drought, water overload, water quality, sustainability and future-proof water systems. Participants will be guided through a design thinking session, helping them to better understand the challenge, explore possible solutions and turn their ideas into a clear concept.

Throughout the hackathon, students will collaborate with experts, receive professional coaching and work towards a final pitch. The challenge gives students the opportunity to combine creativity, technology, innovation and practical thinking to contribute to smarter and more sustainable water management in Limburg.

At the end of the event, each team will present its idea in the form of an elevator pitch, business model canvas and/or prototype. The winning teams will get the opportunity to pitch their ideas during the Festival van de Toekomst on 11 June.

2. Expected outcome

The desired outcome of the challenge is to provide Waterschap Limburg with fresh, creative and practically applicable ideas that can contribute to solving current and future water management challenges. Students are encouraged to think beyond traditional solutions and explore new perspectives, digital tools, technologies or concepts that can support a more sustainable and future-proof water environment.

For Waterschap Limburg, the hackathon is also an opportunity to connect with young talent. The final deliverables should clearly show the value of the idea, how it could work in practice and why it is relevant for Waterschap Limburg. This can be presented through an elevator pitch, business model canvas, prototype or visual concept.
