1. Description of the challenge

Develop an integrated energy optimisation plan for SD42 and SD403 that: reduces energy consumption (gas + electricity) per tonne of product, increases process stability, provides input for the long-term energy transition (e.g. reduced gas dependency), is directly usable for decision-making.

Your analysis should explicitly distinguish between three levels:

Level 1 – Process optimisation (no/low capex)
Improve settings, Reduce variability, Immediate savings

Level 2 – Technical optimisation (medium capex)
Improve heat recovery, Optimise equipment

Level 3 – Transition (strategic)
Alternatives to natural gas, New drying concepts, Integration into the site energy system

All deliverables must be analysed across these three levels.

2. Expected outcome

The project is successful if: A valid Monier diagram is available for each dryer. Energy consumption per ton is fully transparent. At least 15–20% savings potential is demonstrated. A clear  energy transition plan is defined.
