1. Description of the challenge

At Thermo Fisher Eindhoven, we develop and manufacture high-end Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEM). A high-end electron microscope is a massive 3m tall machine accompanied with multiple accessory cabinets and full of sophisticated technology.

The Mission of our company is to make the world Healthier, Cleaner and Safer. In line with that mission, we would like to present this challenge to come up with ideas on how to reduce the environmental footprint of our Electron Microscopes. This can be in many areas, like energy consumption reduction (per acquired image/data set), but also in manufacturing, delivery towards our customers, use of materials, thermal management. How will you contribute to our Mission to support a sustainable and high-tech future?

Guiding questions:

  • How would you characterize the environmental footprint of such a complex electron microscope?
  • Where are the opportunities for us in Development, Manufacturing, Logistics, and Service to reduce the footprint?
  • With the team, can you detail the 2 or 3 ideas that will be most impactful?
2. Expected outcome

A presentation on the proposed solutions to reduce the environmental footprint of the TEM, including the thinking process.
