1. Description of the challenge

Investing in AI for Good – Responsibly

Description of the challenge
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming economies and societies. When applied thoughtfully, AI can help address pressing sustainability challenges – from climate transition and healthcare access to energy efficiency, mobility, and inclusive economic growth.
However, AI also raises significant ethical, social, environmental and governance concerns, such as bias, transparency, data privacy, accountability, energy use, and unequal access to
benefits.

Invest-NL is the Dutch National Promotional Institute and an impact-driven investor. Our mission is to accelerate societal transitions by mobilising capital towards innovative companies and technologies that contribute to a sustainable and resilient Dutch economy. As AI becomes increasingly embedded in these transitions, Invest-NL faces a key question:
how can we invest in “AI for good” while ensuring that AI solutions are developed and
deployed in a responsible, fair, and trustworthy way?

For Invest-NL our investment agenda (link: https://www.invest-nl.nl/nl/kennis-en-publicaties/ai-deep-dive-strategic-investing-in-the-age-of-intelligence) with regards to AI is concentrates on Vertical AI, Human and real-world interfaces,
Data sharing and model validation platforms, Scientific AI, AI accelerators, photonics and neuromorphic hardware.

In this challenge, you will explore what AI for good means in practice, which societal challenges AI can help solve, and what promising AI for good companies and solutions are emerging in the Netherlands and Europe. At the same time, you will examine the principles
of “responsible AI” and how investors like Invest-NL can integrate these principles into investment decisions and portfolio management.

2. Expected outcome

Expected outcome
Students are expected to deliver a clear and well-structured analysis that:

  • Defines AI for good and maps key societal challenges it can address
  • Highlights concrete NL and EU market examples of AI for good solutions
  • If applicable, also describe potential societal risks/ negative side effects related to these solutions

The outcome and recommendations should support Invest-NL and potentially other investors in shaping future AI-related investment decisions.

Format

  • Students are asked to summarize key findings in a 2-pager
  • More detailed findings/ mappings can be delivered in PPT.
