1. Description of the challenge

Travelling by plain is a commodity to many of us but it is also known it has large environmental impact. To mitigate the environment impact of aviation, governments are imposing short-haul flight bans on airlines. Thereby, nudging travelers to opt for more environmentally friendly means of transportation, especially trains.

A typical journey by plane often exists of a short-haul and a long-haul flight, as airports and airlines are connected in a so-called hub and spoke network. For example: you fly from Frankfurt Airport to Schiphol Airport and next take the plane to New York.

At Vanderlande we are searching for more sustainable solutions to transport baggage as part of your journey. We believe that making the train part of this journey can be a solution. Therefore, we want you to redesign the process of baggage handling to include this transportation by train as a part of your journey.

2. Expected outcome

A (re)design of the baggage handling process that integrates the transportation of baggage by train as part of the journey.
Similar to our existing systems that do baggage handling, the solution should by fast, efficient, reliable, safe and traceable, and have a lower environmental impact.
Also, the supporting business model should be considered, as well as a view on potential partnering companies that are needed to realize the solution.
