This challenge is part of the larger hackathon: Advanced technology & Industrial innovation (high tech systems & engineering, chemicals & materials, energy transition).
Oceans are pivotal in the battle for a prosperous future on Earth and yet knowledge of the oceans dynamics lags largely behind. Only 5% of the ocean has been explored. Our knowledge of weather and ocean fluid dynamics, the transport of plastic pollution, or the movements of marine life are limited by our ability to measure and monitor the depths of the oceans. SBM Offshore, has a rich history of engineering design for the offshore energy industry. Our delivery of complex offshore manufacturing platforms such as FPSOs gives us a key understanding of how to engineer for this challenging environment. We at SBM believe we can enable ocean observation just like space satellites have done for decades with space and Earth observation. Our offshore installation can work as platforms for data collection and to deploy maturing technologies for ocean-based solutions to climate change.
The challenge we throw at this Hackathon is therefore to look at this new opportunity from a business perspective.
What key services, industries or products can SBM develop and offer to enable better exploration and management of marine resources? Where could SBM position itself in the growing blue economy (2.3T€ invested/year)?
Innovative business opportunities to enhance ocean exploration and resource management by leveraging its offshore platforms for data collection and technology deployment, addressing the challenges of the blue economy.
SBM Offshore believes the oceans will provide the world with safe, sustainable and affordable energy for generations to come. We share our experience to make it happen. With two thirds of the world’s cities near a shoreline, the oceans contain the key to our energy future. Knowing how to harness the energy in and below the world’s waters is what positions SBM Offshore as a company with an important role to play in the global energy development. From today’s oil and gas to tomorrow’s wind and wave, we are uniquely positioned to facilitate the energy transition. The Company’s main activities are the design, supply, installation, operation and the life extension of floating production solutions for the offshore energy industry over the full lifecycle. The Company is market leading in leased floating production systems, with multiple units currently in operation.
