1. Description of the challenge

Every day several red crosses are placed above the road, mainly for safety. Red crosses are used when for example objects, such as stationary vehicles, are on the road or very close to it or when a car-accident has happened. However, red crosses are often ignored which creates the following challenges;

  • How can we handle the problem of devaluation of the Red Cross?
  • Where should we as Road Authority focus on to secure and increase safety 'under the red cross'?

Why is this challenge important?
Ignoring red crosses is dangerous and leads to multiple accidents from road users with road workers.

There can be all sorts of different reasons people ignore the red crosses. This can be intentional but also unintentional. However, either way it can lead to dangerous situations. Therefore we ask you how can we solve this problem and create more awareness

2. Expected outcome

An analysis and advice on how we can tackle this issue. Some concrete applicable solutions would be valuable.

About Rijkswaterstaat

Rijkswaterstaat is the executive organization of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and works daily to ensure a safe, liveable and accessible Netherlands. We want to live in a country that is protected from flooding. A country with sufficient greenery and sufficient, clean water. And where we can get from A to B quickly and safely. The people of Rijkswaterstaat are committed to this every day. With more than 200 years of knowledge of the organization of our country, they know that this is more than the technical implementation of projects on road and water. It is also about the balance between all those interests: the economy, the environment, the enjoyment of living. Rijkswaterstaat therefore involves citizens in the design of their living environment and collaborates with, for example, water boards, municipalities, companies and knowledge institutes. In this way we work together on sustainable solutions for a safe, liveable and accessible Netherlands.
